“Cool, classy and creative” Bristol named as best place to live in Britain

Bristol has been named the best place to live in Britain.

The South West city has topped the Sunday Times’ list of most desirable places to call home in the UK. Its great food and drink and plethora of glamorous, hi-tech and professional jobs on offer were among the winning factors to help it secure the top spot.

Those behind the guide described Bristol as “a small city that feels like a big city, handily placed for seaside and scenery, but hardly cut off from the rest of the country.”

Louise Ware, sales director at David Wilson Homes in Bristol, says she’s not surprised by the result.

“Bristol is hugely popular among buyers and is fast becoming a rival to London, particularly for young people leaving university and looking to embark on their careers,” she said. “The technology industry in particular is a big employer here and there’s certainly no shortage of jobs.

“Of course, it’s not employment alone that attracts people to live in a city. People want quality housing, good recreational facilities and access to culture. Bristol has that in spades and it’s one of the reasons I’m proud to call it home.”

Barratt Homes sales director Andrea Pilgrim said that its developments in the city are always popular. “We know there is great demand for homes in Bristol as a whole,” said Andrea. “This latest award follows Bristol being named named in the top 10 fasted growing cities in the UK for 2017, according to The UK Powerhouse report so we expect demand to continue.”

Commenting on The Sunday Times Best Places to Live winner, Home Editor Helen Davies said: “Bristol faced stiff competition from many wonderful places to live across Britain. But the city is a worthy winner thanks to its ideal combination of extraordinary culture, impressive schools, buzzing culinary scene, exciting redevelopment and community spirit. We sum the city up as cool, classy and supremely creative.”

Bristol wasn’t the only place in the South West to rank highly in The Sunday Times Best Places to Live Guide. Frome and Bath in Somerset and Exeter in Devon were also singled out for praise. Falmouth in Cornwall was also praised for its beaches, sailing opportunities and its growing tech and design community.
