Bell-ringing swans, historic buildings and spectacular countryside make Wells the perfect place to call home

A Somerset gem, the cathedral city of Wells is just 20 miles from historic Bath. Wells is a popular destination among visitors, who love to explore its medieval architecture and dine in its many excellent eateries.

Situated to the south of the Mendip Hills, the city dates back to Roman times – getting its name from the bubbling springs that can still be found in the gardens of The Bishop’s Palace.

With a population of just 12,000, Wells is England’s smallest city – boasting a spectacular 13th century cathedral.

Bell-ringing swans

Famed for its historic buildings, the city is also known for its pair of bell-ringing swans named Gabriel and Grace, the two follow in a tradition which began in the 1850s, when swans were trained to ring a bell at The Bishop’s Palace gatehouse when they want to be fed.

Attracting popular comedians and actors alike

Wells is also home to a popular comedy festival. Founded in 2015, the event has attracted a large number of visitors – as well as  some of the country’s finest comedians. Alexi Sayle, Rhod Gilbert, Sara Pascoe and Joe Lycett have all performed at pubs, theatres and small venues across the city.

Fans of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost will recognise many of Wells’ landmarks in the movie, Hot Fuzz, which was filmed here.

For the shoppers

Regular markets provide shoppers with an array of local produce – as do Wells’ many independent outlets.

A variety of new homes available

Would-be homebuyers are spoilt for choice in Wells – with David Wilson Homes’ latest development, Bishops Green, situated in Wookey Hole Road. The site features a range of stylish and spacious two, three and four bedroom house designs, within walking distance of the city centre.

Close to attractions and local amenities

Wells is right on the doorstep of a wide selection of tourist attractions – including the caves at Wookey Hole, Cheddar Gorge and caves, Glastonbury and Stourhead. Surrounded by the spectacular countryside of The Mendip Hills and Somerset Levels, the city is perfect as a base for an array of outdoor activities – including walking, nature watching, cycling, caving and abseiling.

With so many local amenities and a beautiful setting, it is the perfect place to call home.
