Barratt Developments has taken on a brand-new apprentice on the Isle of Wight as part of its commitment to nurturing local talent.
Working alongside a team of experienced construction experts, Will will play an important part in creating the brand-new community. Hawthorn Meadows will feature 534 homes once complete, providing much-needed new homes for families on the island.
Will said: “I’ve learnt so much already and seeing the homes being completed gives us all a real buzz. It’s really rewarding to think that the homes I’m helping to build will be where lots of happy memories are made for the people who move into them.”
Will, who lives in Calbourne, will have the benefit of ‘earning while he’s learning’ thanks to his apprenticeship with Barratt Homes. He’ll get paid for the one day a week he spends studying at college as well as the four days a week he spends on site honing his practical skills.
The 17-year-old is in good company at Hawthorn Meadows, working alongside award-winning apprentice Peter Wilson. Peter was named Barratt Homes’ Apprentice of the Year in 2017 and also picked up The News Business Excellence Award for Apprentice of the Year. Just like Peter, Will initially trained to be a carpenter with a different company before realising he wanted to get into the management side of construction and applied for a site management apprenticeship with Barratt Homes.
Will added: “It’s nice having someone there who’s been on a similar path. Pete’s been really helpful and given me a lot of advice already.”
Anthony Dimmick, community liaison manager at Barratt Homes, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Will to what’s already proven itself to be a winning team. Training apprentices is important to us because it helps us to create a new generation of skilled construction workers with our five-star housebuilding ethic.”
Another Barratt Homes apprentice of the Isle of Wight is progressing his career this year. The five-star house builder is currently helping trade apprentice Jordan Mabey through his level three painting and decorating qualification, after he completed his NVQ level 2 this year.
